Enthusiasts' Website Isle of Wight Bus Museum |
The Isle of Wight Bus Museum was created in 1996 to house a growing collection of preserved bus & coach vehicles. Whilst two Open Days were held during 1997, the Museum became open to the public from Easter Sunday 12 April 1998. The museum houses a varied collection of Buses and Coaches dating from the 1910's onward many, of course, having formely operated on the Isle of Wight. The oldest item housed, however, is a Ryde Pier Tram dating from the 1900's. The first floor (upstairs, above the shop) of the museum houses a Photographic Archive of Island Buses in days past together with other memorabilia. The museum shop - Just The Ticket - is stocked with various memorabilia such as photos, old timetables, books, videos, etc. The museum also hold an Annual Autumn Running Day when some of the museum's buses & coaches operate free rides to various parts of the Island and are normally accompanied by various visiting buses from the mainland. These Running Days have been held on 30 November 1997 & 29 November 1998 with an Open Top Running Day on 27 September 1998 and Spring Running Day on 16 May 1999. From autumn 1999 these have always occured on the Sunday preceeding the third Monday in October of each year on 17 October 1999, 15 October 2000, 14 October 2001, 13 October 2002 & 19 October 2003. For 2004 the event occured earlier on 25 April 2004 so as not to clash with the 75th Anniversary of Southern Vectis event which took place on 10 October 2004. Membership of the museum is also available. Members receive the museum journal - Enterprise - four times a year to keep them up-to-date with preservation & museum developments.
